Jyri NissilÄ

 

The finnish conductor Jyri Nissilä studied first clarinet and later conducting in the Sibelius-Academy, Helsinki, Finland. His professors in the conducting class were Jorma Panula, Eri Klas and Leif Segerstam. He has continued his clarinet studies in London and Geneva and his conducting studies in St. Petersburg.

Before his conducting career Jyri Nissilä worked as the second solo clarinettist in the Finnish National Opera Orchestra in 1989-2000. He has performed as a clarinet soloist with several finnish orchestras including the Radio Symphony Orchestra, Lahti Symphony Orchestra and Tapiola Sinfonietta. With the Radio Symphony Orchestra he recorded the Clarinet Concerto in f-minor by Crusell for the Finnish Broadcasting and Television Company in 1995. That year Nissilä also won the second prize in Crusell Clarinet Competition for the Nordic and Baltic clarinettists in Uusikaupunki, Finland.

Jyri Nissilä made his conducting debut with Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra in 1999 conducting Tzigane by Ravel, Symphony in three movements by Stravinsky and Kalevala Suite by Klami among others receiving enthusiastic critics. Since then he has conducted many of the finnish symphony orchestras including Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Kuopio Symphony Orchestra, Jyväskylä Symphony Orchestra and Lappeenranta City Orchestra. In addition to this he has worked with such ensembles as Umo Jazz Orchestra and The Guards Band of the Finnish Defence Forces. In St. Petersburg, Russia, Nissilä has conducted St. Petersburg Capella Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of the State Hermitage. In addition to this he has performed as clarinet-soloist and conductor in Great Britain, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy and Hungary. In 2003 Jyri Nissilä conducted performances of a contemporary chamber opera by finnish composer Kirmo Lintinen in Toronto, Canada.

Jyri Nissilä has been the artistic leader of Helsinki University Symphony Orchestra 2001-2003 and conductor of the Mieslahti Soi –Music Festival Orchestra in 2000-2004 (Kajaani, Finland). Since 1999 Jyri Nissilä is the artistic leader of Aholansaari Sinfonietta Chamber Orchestra. With the Finnish Clarinet Ensemble Jyri Nissilä has made a recording for the Finnish Broadcasting Company and a compact disc by the name “Vento” with music by Tiensuu, Crusell and Sibelius among others and with Kari Kriikku as soloist.

During the last years Jyri Nissilä has achieved acclaim especially as opera conductor.
His opera repertuaire includes works by Mozart (Don Giovanni, Cosi fan tutte, La Finta Giardiniera), Donizetti (Don Pasquale), Puccini (Tosca), Offenbach (The Tales of Hoffmann) and Melartin (Aino) as well as chamber operas. Jyri Nissilä has premiered contemporary finnish chamber operas by Kirmo Lintinen and Kimmo Hakola and music plays by Hannu Pohjannoro and Hannu Sinnemäki. He has also worked as assistant conductor in the Finnish National Opera as well as in the Nürnberg Stadtstheater, Germany.

As conductor Jyri Nissilä has had the opportunity to work with major finnish opera singers such as Jorma Hynninen, Matti Salminen, Juha Uusitalo, Topi Lehtipuu and Riikka Hakola as well as with such foremost instrumentalists as Marko Ylönen, Timo-Veikko Valve, Jorma Katrama, Risto Lauriala, Mihaela Martin and Anatoli Melnikov.
